Thirty-Nine

The taillights of Tom’s Buick were dull red smears in Richard’s vision. He lifted one hand from the steering wheel and rubbed his eyes. The taillights ahead of him obligingly solidified into sharp rectangles again. Richard’s hand returned to the wheel. It gripped hard.

Beside him, Mike sat quiet and unmoving, as he had since Tom had pleaded with them to leave the Hunter place and go to Janelle before anything could happen to her. In his clenched left fist, Mike still held his sister’s necklace. Richard knew it was there because he had dared one furtive glance at his son when they were stopped outside of the Blue Ridge, and he had seen where the chain protruded from between Mike’s closed fingers. They had found her glasses and her cell phone, too. Mike had put them in his coat pockets.

He was staring stoically forward now, his jaw clenched, his eyes bright, his forehead creased, undoubtedly aware of his father’s gaze but unwilling to meet it. He didn’t question, he didn’t accuse, he didn’t rage. He simply sat and stared.

And somehow that was worse than anything else he could have done.

She’s got Holly. The thought burned in his mind. Dear God, dear God, that thing has my daughter.

Richard felt his chest tightening painfully. In his mind, a prayer formed: the most simple and desperate prayer of his life.

Dear God, don’t let her fall. This is my fault. If you have to take someone, take me. If I die, I die, but not my children. Hear me as a father to a Father. And let them understand, Dear God. Let them understand.

Beside him, Mike sat, silent and unmoving. The distance between them might as well have been the distance between the earth and the moon.

Ahead, Tom turned right onto 522 West. Still silently beseeching, Richard followed.
